THE OPPORTUNITY:
Our Career Opportunity and Management Employment Training (COMET) is the exclusive award-winning, fast track training program of Applied Industrial Technologies for May/June 2023 Graduates and Alumni. You will learn about the business from the ground up and be part of an organization with a bright future.
Your training program will include 10 months of personalized training and coaching by managers and peers, many of whom started in the same position. You will receive product training and soft skills training, communications, and customer service through one-on-one, small group, web-based methods, and on-the-job training. We will introduce you to our technical, sales, and operations processes, technology, and strong company culture focused on customer satisfaction, personal mastery, and individual/team contributions.
Our training program, which runs from September through May of each year, has produced sales professionals, local managers, national account managers, regional managers and vice presidents for Applied. Our service center locations are flexible with the date of hire for their COMET associate. They will work with the ideal candidate to find a start date that is mutually beneficial. That means you will not need to wait until September to start a successful career with Applied.

Applied Industrial Technologies is an extensive network of industrial distribution facilities located throughout Canada. We are currently seeking and have an immediate opening for a qualified and motivated individual to fill the position of COMET ASSOCIATE at either our Winnipeg, MB or Edmonton, AB locations.
Reporting to the Technical & Project Manager – Western Canada, the Comet Associate will learn the key functions of the Application Design Specialist role at a junior level throughout the duration of the discussed rotation with a focus on Quality. Career trajectory for this associate could be:
- Application Design Specialist
- Specialized technical roles in various product lines (Fluid Power, Power Transmission, Electronic Control Solutions, etc)
- Technical Sales Representative
- Operations Leaders (Technical & Project Manager – Western Canada, Service Centre Manager, General Manager, etc)
- Opportunity to pursue P.Eng as this role would qualify (Team Members in OEMTS have their P.Eng and can sign off as required)
This position will play an integral role in driving continuous improvements by developing innovative solutions for customer’s applications. Utilizing background knowledge and experience, coupled with insights and training, the Application Design Specialist will become a subject matter expert regarding our fluid power, power transmission, electronic control technologies and project management.
Key Responsibilities:
- Take ownership of the development of solutions from concept to completion
- Collaborate with teams across the organization, as well as vendors to design and deliver solutions to customers.
- Create/ manage technical documentation and files including (CAD drawings and models, technical reports, component/ system troubleshooting, etc.)
- Develop comprehensive technical proposals to sell a customer on our design solution for their application.
- Continuously improve existing project management processes & documentation.
- Establish and maintain strong working relationships with manufacturers and customers.
- Stay up to date on the latest technologies while looking for opportunities to enhance Applied’s product and service offering
- Special projects as required
Preference will be given to individuals with the following qualifications:
- Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar
- General understanding of technical documentation
- Driven by team results
- Ability to read, interpret and apply codes, standards, specifications, and drawings
- Strong desire to build a sales and/or operations career
- Mechanical interest and aptitude
- Results oriented, attention to detail, and good time management skills
- Potential to fill leadership roles in the future
