Position Summary:

The Environmental Health & Safety Manager is responsible for effectively leading the implementation and execution of the company’s Environmental Health & Safety Strategy placing a strong emphasis on continuous improvement and preventative measures.  Leads and drives a progressive approach to Environmental Health & Safety by sustaining or enhancing local practices, processes, tools, and training programs needed to ensure total effectiveness of the area’s environmental health and safety program.  Actively engages and works with management to leverage behavior changing elements of the Environmental Health & Safety program, while engaging the workforce to create and sustain a safety culture that continuously strives to achieve zero injuries.  Additionally, the Environmental Health & Safety Manager is responsible supporting management to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulatory requirements. 

 

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

Policies & Programs:

  • Identify potentially hazardous conditions & unsafe practices through site visits and safety plan reviews.
    • Develop/implement/coordinate new safety training programs utilizing online training resources educational opportunities in partnership with Management.
    • Develop annual Safety Goals in conjunction with Management.
  • Reinforce and promote safety awareness through internal company communications and specific training programs that reduces injuries, incidents, accidents, EMR, and increases morale.
  • Conduct New Employee Safety Orientation as necessary.
  • Actively participate in ISO Certification process & audits across all applicable facilities pertaining to Environmental Health & Safety.
  • Continuously engage the workforce to ensure needs and compliance are met; enforce safety behaviors and positive safety culture.
  • Work closely with Division Operations Manager to ensure initiatives are properly aligned and executed throughout the region to meet or exceed corporate and site specific safety performance goals..
  • Manage, update, and maintain all 3rd Party Safety Program databases (DISA, NCM, ISN, etc.)
  • Update/revise/maintain corporate Safety Manual; maintain safety library (e.g. videos, regulations).
    • Prepare/modify written Safety Policies & Programs.
  • Support Management in implementation of appropriate safety personal protective equipment.
  • Serve as member of Safety Committee; manage daily/weekly safety meetings for all Operations.

 

Drug Testing:

  • Develop Drug-Free Workplace program in partnership with Management.
  • Manage post-hire drug testing company-wide, including random, for cause, post-accident, and DOT/Non-DOT as required.
  • Maintain DOT Environmental Health & Safety Files as required for applicable classes of employees.

 

Regulations:

  • Understand and communicate Federal & multi-State occupational safety regulations and monitor regulatory changes as they occur, providing sufficient advanced notice of all changes.
  • Periodically audit practices and records of Warehouse to ensure compliance with company programs and Federal/State occupational safety regulations.
  • Manage all Workers’ Compensation claims, including all injury claim reporting, investigation & analysis, follow-up, tracking, Return to Work programs, and OSHA log completion/posting (Quarterly & Annually).
  • Manage and complete Contractor Pre-Qualification requests.

 

 

 

Essential Physical Functions/Equipment Used:

  • Must be able to work off hours and/or travel on a short notice basis based on business needs.
  • Able to work in environments with operating conditions that include temperature variances (heat/cold) and/or clean rooms as needed.

 

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required (degree in Operations Management, Industrial Distribution, Warehouse Management, or related field a plus).
  • Minimum 5-7+ years’ experience in Environmental Health/Safety Supervisor/Manager role required; previous experience with multiple locations across several and various states strongly desired.
  • 3+ years prior experience involving OSHA Regulations, Compliance, and Reporting required.
  • 3+ years managing workplace injuries & Workers’ Compensation programs required.
  • 3+ years managing workplace drug testing program, with working knowledge of DOT/Non-DOT regulations required.
  • Previous experience with ISO Certification & Audit procedures strongly desired.
  • Working knowledge of Experience Modification Rating (EMR), Contractor Pre-Qualification Forms, 3rd Party Safety Programs (ISN, DISA, NCM) strongly desired.
  • Proven ability to implement programs to reduce workplace injuries and accidents.

 

Work Environment:

  • Office is located in Corporate Headquarters in Columbus, OH.  Consists of a modern, multi-function office environment.  Position will also spend considerable time in various warehouse environments (inventory, shipping receiving, assembly, machine shop, staging areas, etc.).
  • Travel (approximately 35-40%).
  • No direct supervision of other employees, position will work closely with other departments (Human Resources, Operations, Warehouse, etc.) to achieve objectives.
